From Sunday afternoon through the wee hours of Wednesday morning, we went nonstop.</p> <p>As exciting as it is to tell the story of innovation unfolding, it’s even more of a rush for the companies presenting at the conference. They have a lot of stake — from months or even years of development, the harrowing selection process overseen by DEMO executive producer and VentureBeat editor-in-chief Matt Marshall, the fee selected companies pay to present, and the time it takes to get out to the desert. It all came together at the JW Marriott Desert Springs, the site of the conference.</p> <p>And you name it, DEMO Spring 2011 had it — and we covered it. Life-saving altitude simulators. Instant market research, just add Internet. A real reason for the mailman to go postal.</p> <p>You’ve read our blow-by-blow coverage of the launches and the winners of the prestigious DEMOgod award and the $1 million grand prize. But as Marshall said as he kicked off DEMO Spring 2011, this promised to be the most social DEMO ever — from the wired-in startups taking advantage of new social technologies to the nonstop networking and parties on site. After the action on stage, it was the lobbies, the bars, the restaurants and the nightclubs where the DEMO community created real value. I couldn’t cross a room, it seemed, without hearing about some new funding coming through.</p> <p>All work and no play? Hardly. The higher battery life is a big milestone because it’s very hard to balance great performance with power consumption. The more powerful a device is, the more power it consumes. But this device crosses the one-day threshold in battery life, and that takes a lot of advanced technology.</p> <p>Most computer makers are striving to get to 24-hour battery life. But by packing in a heavy battery, HP was able to get to 32 hours for its HP EliteBook 8460p laptop (pictured right)  for business users. It shows that the newest generation of chips, hard drives, batteries and other technologies is starting to yield considerable benefits for consumers. The p-series laptops from HP start at $999 and will be available on March 15.</p> <p>To get to 32 hours, you have to buy the HP BB09 ultra-extended life notebook battery and download the latest Intel graphics driver and HP BIOS (or startup software). The notebook can get to 32 hours if you use Intel graphics, a 160-gigabyte Intel flash memory SSD drive, an HP LED HD display and Windows 7. So it costs more and it adds one pound to the overall weight, but in case you’re using your computer on the battlefield and can’t get back to your base, it could come in handy. (I’m only partly joking there, since the machine is up to military specifications for durability).</p> <p>HP is launching its new line-up now because it is using the newest Sandy Bridge microprocessors from Intel. It’s also the first time in a couple of years that HP has revamped its industrial design for business laptops. The new machines use a common “design language,” which goes by the acronym FORGE (see picture at bottom), with a focus on “form, optimized, richness, green and enduring.” That means HP is trying to design cool, nice-looking products that last a long time and are environmentally friendly. It’s the kind of design philosophy that HP hopes will help it compete with Apple in industrial design.</p> <p>Each of the new p-series, b-series (pictured above), and s-series laptops  (pictured below) share the same design language. HP’s new laptops use precision aluminum-alloy hinges so that it isn’t easy to snap the laptop in two. It also has cast titanium-alloy latches and a strong magnesium-aluminum chassis. There’s a “double-shot” rubber frame that acts as a shock-absorbing barrier to protect the display panel from scuffs and scratches. There are quick access buttons on the keyboard that let you access functions such as wireless networking, mute, and a calculator.</p> <p>The back of the EliteBooks are interesting because you can remove the back plate by flipping a switch. You can thus swap out a hard drive, change the memory, or do other things to it without using a screwdriver or any other tool. Compare that approach to Apple’s which goes so far as to change screws so that people can’t get inside their machines.</p> <p>The p-series machines (8460p and 8560p) weigh 4.56 pounds and 6.1 pounds respectively. They have 14-inch and 15.6-inch diagonal LED-backlit displays and run the latest Intel second-generation Core microprocessors (code-named Sandy Bridge, with graphics and microprocessor on a single chip).</p> <p>The HP ProBook b-series laptops are more configurable and have a 13.3-inch display. They start at $799 and will be available on March 15. They use the Sandy Bridge processors or Intel Celeron processors. They also have a smudge-resistant and wear-resistant tungsten-colored design.</p> <p>The HP ProBook s-series machines have a wide variety of sizes, from smaller ultralight machines to desktop replacements. They’re targeted at small businesses. The displays range from 13.3 inches to 17.3 inches. The starting weight is 3.79 pounds and the machines use Intel Sandy Bridge processors or Celerons. The prices start at $579 and machines will be available on March 15.</p> <p>The s-series machines have HP’s ProtectTools security suite, including HP’s fingerprint sensor and HP face recognition. Microsoft says that it will be used to power devices like phones (Windows Phone 7 is based on Windows CE), GPS units, and in-car computers. It could also potentially be used for tablets in the future, but Microsoft has shown little interest in that possibility so far.</p> <p>Instead, Microsoft is still trying to pursue Windows 7 as a legitimate tablet operating system, which has wrought failed devices like HP’s Slate. Rumors are also floating around that the company will be positioning Windows 8 as its flagship  tablet offering. But Windows 8 won’t be released until 2012 at the earliest, which leaves this year completely open for competitors like Google, RIM, and HP to grab a slice of the tablet market from Apple.</p> <p>If Microsoft wants to compete in the tablet arena and take on the iPad, it needs a powerful-yet-lightweight mobile operating system. Windows Embedded Compact 7 is clearly its best option. So why is the company once again trying to convince us that a desktop operating system like Windows 8 can magically turn into a tablet-optimized platform?</p> <p>Now Microsoft could conceivably have some master plan in mind for Windows 8 on tablets. But history doesn’t inspire much hope. The company tried to convince us that Windows XP was a tablet operating system for years, and when that failed it ignored the tablet market altogether. Microsoft’s many failures with bringing Windows to tablets proved that desktop interfaces are meant for the keyboard and mouse, not multitouch interaction.</p> <p>Given that Windows Phone 7 is based on Windows CE’s kernel (the heart of every operating system), Microsoft should have wised up and pursued the same strategy for tablets. Windows Phone 7 impressed me with its speed and gorgeous interface, and there’s no reason why Microsoft can’t translate that experience to tablets. Rumors say that it may try to place similar slick design elements atop Windows 8 for tablets, but if that’s the case, why burden tablets with a full-blown desktop OS?</p> <p>Windows Embedded Compact 7 is the closest thing Microsoft has to Apple’s iOS, which powers the iPad, and Google’s Android mobile OS. The OS brings with it support for Adobe Flash 10.1, Microsoft Silverlight, and a new mobile version of Internet 8, among other improvements over Windows CE. Basically, it seems perfectly positioned to power tablets.</p> <p>Unfortunately for us, the closest Microsoft has gotten to bringing the OS to tablets was via a prototype at Computex last year. Asus had also mentioned that it intended to use Windows Embedded Compact 7 in a tablet last year, but it later chose to go with Android. Since then, we’ve heard little about other manufacturers volunteering to use the OS in their tablets.</p> <p>We’re only a few hours away from the iPad 2’s announcement, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that Microsoft is the only company among its peers without a clear tablet strategy. RIM, a traditionally enterprise-focused company that would likely have trouble finding “sexy” in the dictionary, managed to blow me away with its slick BlackBerry PlayBook. Even HP has managed to deliver something compelling with its WebOS-powered TouchPad.</p> <p>I’m not sure what it will take for Microsoft to realize that nobody wants to run Windows 7 or Windows 8 on a tablet. But the company will likely realize soon that it will need to come up with some sort of solid tablet strategy. A few small ones, there are very few that are as large as we are. What sets us apart from all the other sites is that we follow the integrity of the day-to-day deal. We make sure that, even when we have an item that we’re able to markup a little bit, we intentionally don’t – we stick to our small margins and move more volume than anything, and make sure the customer is satisfied.</p> <p>We never say, let’s take an item today, since we have 350,000 people, and mark it up $5 or $10 – we just don’t do that. Everything has to be at the best offered price. So we’re essentially pushing the wholesale cost to the customer with a very small markup, and people love it. Some days, we’re even willing to lose money to attract people. </p> <p>The funding comes from Optima Ventures, an affiliate of Optima International. Optima and 1SaleaDay are now teaming up to form Octagon Commerce, a parent company that owns all five sites and will launch new social media and e-commerce products. Billions of dollars are at stake and the winner will capture some of the most hardcore fans for any product in any market.</p> <p>This fall, EA will launch Battlefield 3, its latest entry in the great feud between EA and Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty series. As you can see from the images, the graphics are startlingly realistic. This means that EA has been busy, investing millions upon millions of dollars in better computer graphics and larger development staffs in an attempt to knock Call of Duty, the best-selling game of the holidays for the past couple of years running, off its throne. EA released new images and video tonight, and it showed the game off to the press at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.</p> <p>You can tell that this competitive battle is a huge one just by looking at the frequency with which each company is now launching major games. Activision Blizzard is now launching a major Call of Duty game every November and it follows that up with a couple of multiplayer map pack launches in the subsequent months. EA launched its Medal of Honor game in October 2010, and it launched its Battlefield Bad Company 2 game in March, 2010. EA executives have been saying recently, when asked how the battle with Activision is going, “just wait until you see Battlefield 3.”</p> <p>That’s a punishing release schedule. This means that each company has multiple teams working on the titles, which take tens of millions of dollars to make and a team of maybe 100 people working for two years. With the multiple teams at work, each company can now release a major title every year or even more often than that.</p> <p>The game is being made by EA’s Digital Illusions CE (DICE) studio in Sweden. That studio has toiled on the Battlefield series since it began. With Battlefield 3, DICE has upped its game considerably, shifting from games that really did used to look like video games, with all of their clear flaws that reduced the feeling of realism. But the scenes that EA is showing off now look more like a movie or a combat video.</p> <p>The new Battlefield game is set in Iraq, near the Iranian border, in the year 2014. As you can see from the trailer, U.S. Marines are engaged in pacification efforts in the middle of a city. The graphics are pretty darn stunning and are among the most realistic I’ve seen. You can look closely at the see-through smoke, the facial hair on the soldiers, the dancing flames, the sunlight coming through the windows, the shadows, the haze in the city. EA will slowly reveal trailer after trailer to tease gamers and get some froth going among the rabid fans.</p> <p>Normally, video game companies make a scene look more sexy with pre-canned animations that are more like computer-generated films than actual game play. But as you can see when the action starts in this firefight, the live game play is almost indistinguishable from the look of the scripted sequence. That’s the mark of a very realistic video game experience.</p> <p>The next installment of the Battlefield 3 video trailers will debut on March 16. As outlined by TechCrunch’s Jason Kincaid, Google’s latest update to its Nexus S phone eliminates the ability for users to see their Facebook contacts in their Android address book. What’s the rationale? Here’s what a Google spokesperson said:</p> <p>We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability.</p> <p>Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation — and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.</p> <p>Maybe I’m being too cynical here, but it’s hard to imagine that Google made this change in response to users complaining, “Oh darn, I can’t take export my Facebook contacts from my phone. If that’s the case, purge them from my address book completely!” Instead, this looks like another way for Google to pressure Facebook into sharing more of its contact data, or at least to score some publicity points around the issue of data portability.</p> <p>That feeling is exacerbated by the fact that this only applies to the Nexus S right now (though Google says it could also include “future lead devices” for the Android operating system). That means the company can make its grand statement about data portability without affecting a large number of users.</p> <p>Google isn’t even making this change on the current device’s predecessor, the Nexus One, because “the Facebook app was preloaded on Nexus One,” which “created an expectation for users of how the device would function.” On the other hand, allowing this feature and then taking it away isn’t a case of false expectations at all, right?</p> <p>So why make the change now? It offers iBankUp accounts that include a Visa prepaid card, a direct deposit number, and an online checkbook, but don’t require a credit check or a minimum deposit. (There is a small monthly fee and an ATM withdrawal fee.) It also offers prepaid Visa cards through its Upside program.</p> <p>The company was originally aimed at a younger audience (the “y” in Plastyc is supposed to suggest “Generation Y”), but a Plastyc spokesperson said the customer base turned out to be broader, probably because of the recession. She pointed to data from Quantcast saying the main user demographic is 35 to 49 years old. There are 110,000 people who have signed up for Plastyc, and 75,000 monthly active users, she said, and they typically make less than $60,000 per year.</p> <p>The funding comes from Core Innovation Capital, the investment partner for the Center for Financial Services Innovation (a research and advocacy organization that focuses on the underbanked). Plastyc said it will use the money to add services that help customers improve their savings and credit, and to offer a version that banks can sell with their own branding.</p> <p id="tags" But game maker Her Interactive is trying to make it relevant for the age of the iPad with a new app launching today called Nancy Drew Mobile Mysteries: Shadow Ranch.</p> <p>The app includes text inspired by the original Nancy Drew book. But the company calls Shadow Ranch a “game book,” the first in a series that will up the ante for publishers cranking out eBooks by the dozen. If this combination of gaming and storytelling takes off, you can expect to see the genre of game books open up in a big way on smartphones and tablets.</p> <p>This title takes game play much farther than some of the other electronic books on the market, says Megan Gaiser (pictured), chief executive of Her Interactive, a maker of video games targeted at broad audiences including girls and women.</p> <p>“By combining a book and a game, we’re trying to create a whole new form of interactive entertainment,” she said in an interview. “You get to play the story.”</p> <p>The game book is the first in a series of titles dubbed Mobile Mysteries that Her Interactive will make around the Nancy Drew license. The game book runs on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. Gaiser said the team at Her Interactive has been working on the title for months, refining it meticulously since it is the company’s first foray into the Apple mobile market.</p> <p>The focus on girls is aimed at creating games that match the audience for the Nancy Drew books, which have been entertaining young readers since 1930. Gaiser hopes that women who grew up with the books (which includes women such as Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton) will read the game book with their children. Overall, the Nancy Drew books have sold more than 100 million copies.</p> <p>“It has a lot of nostalgia value,” Gaiser said.</p> <p>Her Interactive was founded in 1995 and has been working on Nancy Drew computer games since 1997. At first, Gaiser said that no game publishers would publish the company’s games because they were targeted at girls, who were perceived as non-gamers. The company launched its games on Amazon.com, bypassing the traditional publishers. Then a successful Barbie title launched and the publishers all came back.</p> <p>Her Interactive focuses on high quality games with humor, stories, and a modern interpretation of Nancy Drew as a character. Since Her Interactive launched its first Nancy Drew computer game, the company has sold more than 8.7 million units. That’s a better record for a game series on the PC than Myst or Lord of the Rings, Gaiser said. The series has won 23 Parent’s Choice gold medal awards.</p> <p>About 40 percent of video game players today are women, according to the Entertainment Software Association. But relatively few titles are targeted at women and girls.</p> <p>The game book has a bunch of rich graphics that you can tap on the iPad’s touchscreen. On the first page, you can tap on a picture of a truck and hear its horn honk. As you turn the pages, an animation shows the page turning as if it were a real book. The book is filled with lots of hidden object games, where you find the eggs hidden in a forest or collect things that you’ll need later on in the adventure. There’s a part where you have to solve word puzzles in order to help Nancy win a horse race. And there’s a part where you have to navigate your way through underground caves.</p> <p>Altogether, there are 20 hidden object games and a bunch of other mini games across eight chapters. There are 49 collectibles, 49 word challenges, 65 images, 60 sounds, 10 animations and five graphical choices and a couple more mini games. The game is not the same as the Nancy Drew: The Secret of Shadow Ranch game that Her Interactive published on the PC in 2004. The story is different and so is the game play.</p> <p>The competition is plentiful on the App Store, between the 57,455 books and 51,450 games available. But game books are relatively rare. Oceanhouse Media makes a lot of books based on the Dr. Seuss and other children’s book brands. And many of its titles are also interactive, although they’re aimed at teaching kids how to read. The Nancy Drew app is $9.99 on the iPad and $2.99 on the iPhone and iPod Touch.</p> <p>Gaiser says the game book is targeted at girls ages 9 to 14. My 7-year-old girl tried it out and loved it. My 14-year-old girl also picked it up and read the book for three hours straight. When she gave the iPad back to me, she said the book was “boring.” But she just didn’t want to admit that she liked a Nancy Drew game book, since she acts like she’s too old for it.
